KALABAKA

Kalabaka is known all over Greece and the world for its eminent monasteries that are built on the top of the rocks of Meteora and are found east and north of it. Millions of visitors flock from all over the world each year in order to admire them and worship them. They stay in Kalabaka and Kastraki. Kalabaka is a city with rich history and important monuments. The most important of these, is the Holy Temple of Dormition of the Mother of God that lies in the N-W department of the city under the very tall rock of Aias.

The city of Kalabaka is built under the rocks of Meteora and on the left bank of the Penaeus River, at the point that it enters the Thessalian plain. It is a place for visitors that wish to know the monuments and the splendid localities of Aspropotamos, Chasia, koziaka and mainly Meteora.

The city of Meteora is the capital of the homonym province that expands to the N.W district of the Prefecture of Trikala. In this area there are beautiful hotels, modern camping’s, restaurants and tourist shops.

The ancient name of the city was Aiginion. It is mentioned in the Hellenistic and Roman years because of the big importance of its place. The name Aiginion is carved on a sign that is found in the Eastern department of the Church of Saint Ioannis the Precursor. In the beginning of the 10th century (901-907) current Kalabaka is reported as Stagoi, a name that is maintained today as a Metropolitan title.

From Kalabaka a lot of sightseers passed from the ancient years up to today and report it with the name Aiginion or with name Stagoi or with the current name Kalabaka. The picturesque district of Sotopou is situated in the N.W department of the city under the rock of Holy Trinity (East) and the rock of ‘Altsos” (north).

In the city there are a lot of small temples, chapels from the post-Byzantine era, in many of which iconographies exist.

The cathedral temple of Saint Bissarion was erected in honor of the Saint Metropolite of Larissa that was the founder and owner of the Abbey Dousikou. The temple has been iconographied entirely by Ioannis Almpani.

The Byzantine temple of Dormition of the Mother of God is the most important and imposing monument of Kalabaka.
