HISTORY OF KALABAKA

Built on the foothills of the Rocks of Meteora, it is a commercial and tourist centre, not only in order for someone to visit the Meteora but also in order to visit Chasia, Koziaka or Triggia and Aspropotamos, while it is also a passage to Epirus.

Ancient Aiginion, in the Byzantine times, was renamed to “Stagous” a name that the local Metropolis maintains until today. The name “Kalampaka” begins to be used from the era of sultan Bagiazit II’ after the Turkish conquest of Thessaly (1393-1394) and emanates according to some from the word Kalebak (beautiful fortress) and to others from the name of probably some famous sovereign.

The fortress of Stagon is built on the acropolis of ancient Aiginio. In the Northwest of Kalabaka, above the temple of Dormition of the Mother of God and under the rocks of Meteora, the ruins of the wall of the ancient city of Aiginion are saved. This castle, was probably connected to that of Kastraki, that is between the rocks “Aia” and “Altsos”

In the duration of Byzantine Empire the region of Kalabaka follows the historical course of the Prefecture. In 527 A.D. it is invaded by the Slavic people, while in 904 A.D., year that Thessalonica conquered Sarakini, the region was challenged by their ferocity. Later in 976 A.D. and 1025 A.D. , it is attacked by the Bulgarians and in 1081 A.D. by the Normans. In 1204 was governed by the Despotate of Epirus, while in the end of the 13th century it passed to the sovereignty of dukes of Neon Patron( Ypatis) and later to the empire of Andronicus II’ Palaiologos.

In 1348 it passes to the sovereignty of the Serbs of Stefanos Dousan and then of his brother Simeon Ouresi Palaiologos. With the Turkish occupation of Thessaly, Kalabaka was governed administratively by the Pasha of Larissa. Later it was governed by the Santzaki of Trikala and it becomes an important commercial center, in which the 18th century a Greek school functions. The Metropolis Stagon, as it appears from the various documents, exists from the 10th century, it has privileges and accepts donations from a lot of emperors. It was maintained until 1899 when it was incorporated to the Metropolis of Trikki.
