The permanent population of the Prefecture of Trikala is 131.085 residents (GREEK NATIONAL STATISTICAL ORGANISATION, 2011) and corresponds to the 1, 3% of the total population of our country and to the 18,5% of the total population of Thessaly. According to the results of the inventory in 2001, the 2, 4% of the population of the Prefecture are foreigners (3.385). Between 1991 and 2001 the population of Trikala has decreased by 0,6%, in contrast to the increase population of the country’s total  population  by 6,9%.

During the period 1981-1991 the percentage of individuals that lived in urban regions presented a small increase of 1, 62%, while during the decade 1991-2001 it increased about 12, 87%.

The Prefecture of Trikala has the smallest density of population (residents per Km2) concerning the rest Prefectures. Certainly the Prefecture of Trikala is mountainous and it is natural to face this problem.

The prominent woodland and agricultural character of the Prefecture with the small industrial production defines the form of employment in the Prefecture. In the region Kalabaka- Meteora -Pyli and the surrounding villages, due to the various activities, the employment covers all three sectors of economy, with an important percentage being occupied, completely and exclusively, in the tourism industry  mainly in Kalabaka and Kastraki, because of the Meteora.

In the area of Aspropotamos because of the intense forestall character, work is related mainly to the forests, agriculture and tourism. In the cluster Chasion-Antichasion, the residents are occupied mainly in agriculture and farming. In the rest of the flatland the residents deal with agriculture (dynamic cultures, agricultural enterprises, greenhouses etc.) The biggest percentage of residents of the city of Trikala is occupied with rendering services (trade, services, small and intermediate manufactures, buildings etc.), whereas a big part of those work in the industries of the region.

The biggest number of residents of the Prefecture is occupied in the Rural Sector (inventory of 2001). The women working in all professional categories present smaller percentages than the men, apart from the categories of employees of technologists and technical assistants. The rates of working women, almost in all professional categories, are close to the percentages of the total working women in our country in the corresponding professional categories.
